Internet and the 2000 years old philosophy

Life are limited. Knowledge are infinite. Chasing the infinite with limited life are foolish. People who though they know everything are in grave trouble.
ZhuangZi – inner page, Principal of preserving living (Ping Ying : Yang-Shen-Zu)

Wise people will learn the substances than knowing the form, fools will follow the forms and ignore the substances.

For a thousands year, the claim of infinite knowledge versus limited life are misinterpreted in many way. Many has take this as example of pessimistic thinking of Tao philosophy .

The biggest issue of ancient philosophy thinking are always due to the interpretation. Alas, because some of the idea are so ahead of era, few people get it right but simply translate to something they understand during their era.

For 21st century, the limited life vs infinite knowledge has sprung to a level that no human being in the pass 50 years ever imagine : Internet.

Nobody can imagine the Internet has evolve into the biggest knowledge that human ever discover. For the time being, Internet are not able to compete with the static knowledge store in world various libraries. However, information over the internet reach has breach over Petabytes and start close up to exabytes (exclude P2P download).

If you read the original context closely, ZhuangZi does not ask one to abandon the knowledge after all, he just point out a phenomena : a phenomena that one can be solved by collective human interaction and information gathering, which require a new way of thinking!

The original context didn’t teach about a new way of thinking, but it is an obvious conclusions. It is a feudal society, even Zhuangzi put the liberals ideology in the writing, few people can understand nor accept it.

However, Zhuangzi ideology does provide a solid foundation for the later Mahayana Buddhism spread in China by Bodhidharma (达摩). The second patriarch of Chan, Huike (慧可) are indeed profess in various Chinese philosophy teaching include the Tao philosophy. Huike approach Bodhidharma to seek enlightenment since he get little clue about Tao philosophy.

Today, Internet has enable the “infinite knowledge” era. It is a infrastructure that build from “limited life” human being which has a infinity possibilities.

A scholar with many Phd can never compete with the information store inside the Internet. However, any scholar can indeed utilised the Internet to complement their knowledge, share information, spark a new idea, etc.

Are Tao philosophy primitive and pessimistic?

I afraid the 2000 years old philosophy are beyond its era, even for 21st century.
