Election reading : The Song of Jianghu Cruising

For the light bits of Malaysia election, if you want to read some books that related to election, I don’t recommend George Orwell Animal Farm.

For all Asian, the best story about politics is none other than famous Hong Kong writer Cha Liang Yong 查良鏞(Pen name : Jing Yong 金庸) book : The Song of Jianghu Cruising or The Smiling Proud Wanderer (mandarin ping yin : Xiao Au Jiang Hu 笑傲江湖)

In my opinion, Smile and wandering the world is a Jing Yong literature view about the famous Chinese Philosophy books ZhuangZi

Jing yong has wrote opinion about the main character with and refer him as a solitary or recluse mentioned inside Confucious “LunYu”(论语).

Solitary or recluse are pretty unique in Chinese society philosophy. In Confucianism, a solitary are wise man refuse to serve the authority. However, Zhuangzi philosophy view “solitary” in differently : a wise man that will do his duty to safeguard the welfare of society, but will not hesitate to quit when he done is job, or when the situation does not permit him to perform.

The definition of solitary is merely one contradiction between Confucianism vs ZhuangZi philosophy.

JingYong has wrote an amazing food of though : is it worthwhile for one to scarifies important things in their life to achieve something, whether it is for money, power, avenging ,etc?

Dong Fong Bu Bai castrate himself to learn Kuifabaodian Swordplay (another name for PekChe Swordplay) in order to seize power to become leader of the Sun & Moon party.

Yat Bu Qun castrate himself to learn PekChe Swordplay to become the leader of 5 mountains alliances.

Ling Peng Zi castrate himself to learn PekChe Swordplay to avenge the death of his parent.

Yu Chang Hai son is killed by Ling Peng Zi when he plot the plan to snatch PekChe Swordplay scripts from Ling Peng Zi family.

In story of ZhuangZi, there is a story talk about well being of living vs materialistic gain.

The Kingdom Chu want to hire ZhuangZi as prime minister. The king representative seek out for ZhuangZi and notify the news.

ZhuangZi ask,”I know Chu has a big turtle dead for thousands of years. The turtle shell has been put on the temple and honor by Chu king for century. Let me ask you a question, as the turtle, do you prefer to be death shell and honor in the temple or alive and dip its tail in the mud?”

The representative answer,”The turtle definitely prefer to be alive and dip its tail in the mud”.

ZhuangZi, “Please go back to your king, I prefer dip my tail in the mud”.

Many people though ZhuangZi don’t like to be officer. In fact, it is partially true, it is not because ZhuangZi don’t want to be the prime minister, but according to history, that Chu kingdom are in the midst of self-destruction. All the king during the warring state period are not hesitate to execute their minister for no reason.

Dong Fong Bu Bai, Yat Bu Qun has little hesitate to gain and castrated themselves to gain the power of PekChe swordplay. Even they know it means they will lost the manhood forever.

While for Ling Peng Zi, although he did successfully avenge the death of his parent, but he pay a hefty price and his family trait are ended because he castrated himself.

Besides the powerful PekChe swordplay, JingYong also touch about the issue of unity.

Another tyrant in the book, Jo Leng Chan, has plot a plan to merge 5 different faction together and make himself the leader for the new union. To do that, Jo Leng Chan has plan undercover over other factions, plot fake enemy attack, killing other faction leader, and many dirty tricks and propaganda to fake the requirement of a strong united faction from others factions(besides his own faction ).

When writing the story in the 60’s, JingYong has a clear mind about the problem of “unity”. Always, the problem is not the unity itself, but the process. Many country and government, calling for “unity”, “harmony”, but with a price of suppressing dissident voices and even pay with blood. When the leader gain the absolute power from “unity”, they will shed even more blood.

This is similar to the ZhuangZi philosophy to warn people the danger of corruption of authority.

Where to get the book
